During World War II, more than 9,000 women worked on Mare Island in Vallejo, CA, building ships for the U.S. Navy. They stepped into jobs traditionally held by men, learning to weld, fabricate, rivet, and build the ships that carried our nation’s defense around the world.

They became skilled workers. They were determined. They were essential.

Yet today, there is no monument honoring these women and the vital role they played in our nation’s history.

Our vision is to change that.

Wendy The Welder will be a large-scale sculpture created as a permanent monument to the women workers of Mare Island who answered the call during WW II. She will represent their courage, skill, determination, and sacrifice.

This sculpture will not simply honor the past. It will tell future generations what can happen when ordinary people step forward to do extraordinary things.
